ALL SAINTS SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 1, 2020

We revere the saints. Our parishes and schools are named after them and some countries do have saints as their patrons. St. Joseph for Canada. We also have patron saints for the sick, the dying and health care workers. We may wonder how lives of saints relate to our lives and our circumstances today. We marvel at the lives of the saints and we might even have a tendency to think that the saints were some “extraordinary” human beings who were different from us. We might wonder if it could be possible to follow their footsteps. However, over the past 40 years the declaration of many men and women as saints- people like archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Brother Andre of Canada and recently October 10 Pope Francis Beatified( though he has yet to be recognized as a saint, beatification is a step closer to canonization) Bl. Carlo Acutis 15 year old a blessed and holy young person dressed in jeans and sneakers proclaiming the kingdom of God in the simplest way possible, who created a website that catalogued Eucharistic miracles throughout history. And we were happy to witness-this exhibition in our parish hall last year From November 3 to 9, 2019. They have helped us to have insight into the way the saints have lived among us. The Saints share with us one baptism and one faith in Jesus Christ. They lived lives of fidelity to God even if that life meant death. The stories about the lives of the saints inform us that they witnessed to God in their own circumstances and situations by serving others with the gifts entrusted to them. Saints were ordinary people- yong, adult, lay men and women, clergy and religious- who responded to the call of Jesus “to take up their cross to follow Him. Our celebration of All Saints’ Day reminds us that as Christians we are to develop an attitude similar to that of the saints. It is at the time like this we need to show a greater concern for the other to help bring the love of God through our actions based on our faith. We can relate to the saints when we strive to follow in their footsteps. May God guide us to imitate the faithfulness of the saints in our service to God’s people. May all the Saints in heaven pray for us.!

POPE FRANCIS’S PRAYER TO MARY :
(For protection from the Coronavirus)

O Mary, you shine continuously in our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the sick. At the foot of the cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to confirm ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us , through the cross, to the joy of the Ressurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas-we who are put to the test-and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and Blessed Virgin.

YOUR PARISH NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT:

 30th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - October 25, 2020

Love is such a big word. It covers a gamut of definitions and means something different to most everyone. But Christ brought an entirely new and radical meaning to the word. In him, we came to understand that love is more than an emotion, a choice, a commitment or an attitude. Love is a person. His name is Jesus Christ. If we want to know what love means, therefore, we must look at Jesus Christ. Love is a person, not just any person, but God, who forsook his divinity in order to take on our humanity. Yes, love is a person who has laid down his life for us, and by doing so, demonstrates to us the true depths and most profound meaning of that love. This is how Paul describes Christ’s love. “ For Christ died for us when we were yet sinners, and that is God’s own proof of his love towards us”. Love of God before before anything else, as the response of the entire person to God’s total self-giving covenant: love him with your mind, heart and soul. In other words, it is loving God with our entire being. Nothing is to be held back. Love doesn’t allow for a compartmentalisation that reserves certain sections of our lives. Neither is this love compromised even in the face of the love we have to offer someone, for example, a wife’s love for her husband or a husbands love for his wife, or their love for their children and vice versa. The love of neighbor can never take precedence over love of God. In all instances love of God must come first in its totality. If we have given everything to God, then how can we make sense of the second part of the great commandment, to love our neighbor as ourselves? Here, Jesus, who is both God and man, joins the love of God and love of neighbor inseparably for eternity. Loving those around us is not competition for our undivided love of God. Rather loving our neighbor is evidence of our love for God. And no exceptional standard of ethics and morality can be valid without love of our neighbour. Through this two-fold Great commandment, Jesus provides us with wise directions to navigate between two dangerous pitfalls. If we say that we truly love God, then we must obey him in every way and not just be contented with having good feelings or wishes. And finally loving God empowers us and frees us to love other people, without the usual strings attached. The demand of love reminds us that we should never settle for a minimum concern for neighbours, but instead go the extra mile m, to give without expecting anything in return and finally even to emulate the example of our Lord to lay down of our lives for the other, for which there is no greater love.

29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - October 18, 2020

Today in the Gospel, we witness Divine intellect against the demonic intellect. The trap that the Pharisees and Herodians set is one of perfection. Jesus by giving a fitting answer “Give to Caesar what is due to Caesar and give to God what is due to God.” Reminds them that they are made in the image and likeness of God and their work should be the work of God and not the work of the devil. We too however must be very aware of the traps that are set for us in order to distract ourselves from the image we are created in and how that image is meant to glorify God. Only in our closeness to the Divine will we escape the trap maliciously set for us.  There are many cunning traps set for our lives to get us to work for nothing, “ important,” things like status.  How many people are working for status? We might tell ourselves things such as, “ Once I have it made I will then do good things for the poor.” Or if working for fame, that you will use it for good. Perhaps wanting to be a great athlete, but for what purpose are you exerting your effort now and using your time? Are we rendering the image and likeness of God unto a great work of pride? Only in our closeness to God will we escape from these cunning traps to simply distract us from the reality of life or to work from nothing. To be healthy we must ask. “What is our purpose?” And then we must see if the things we are doing in life are fulfilling that. If our purpose is to know, love and serve God and be happy with Him in eternity then we must question what we are doing. We cannot make things end in themselves; things are for a purpose. That purpose is to know, love and serve God and be happy with Him in this world and the next. Most things are good in themselves but they have terrible ends. Let us stay close to God and He will show the way out of whatever trap we are in as he showed his apostles and the Pharisees.

SCHOOL THANKSGIVING MASS

OBER 16, 2

28th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME October 11, 2020 (THANKSGIVING WEEKEND)

People often address us the way we dress. If you dress well. People will address you well, and the opposite is the case. The hood may not make the monk, but it could identify a monk. The liturgy of the word this Sunday has a message for us which centres around an invitation to a banquet and dressing correctly for the banquet. Two critical things that precede events are, invitation and dress. It will be good for us to understand that the banquet points to the heavenly banquet which is open for everyone and at the same time restricted to those who have the right dress. The kingdom of heaven is a divine facility that is open for everyone, and daily we are invited to come and be part of it. In the narrative, we discover that the king did not give up even when those invited could not honour it. He continued to send more servants to make sure that the banquet is full. The king seems to understand the value of the banquet more than those he was inviting. God is still sending out invitations to us to come to His banquet through the word of God that we hear daily encouraging us to change our ways and go back to God. When we come back to God, we should be able to leave the things of the past. The man who was not well dressed in the narrative represents most of us who answer Christians but do not live the life. Some of us want the new, but they do not wish to cast off the old. As we are in thanksgiving weekend, let us be conscious of God’s invitation to us to His eternal banquet. In our day and age, some people are still giving excuses to God: “I am busy, I do not have time.” Somewhere I read the “BUSY” means “Being under Satan’s yoke.” We often forget that our lives come from God and it will be a show of ingratitude not to have time for the giver of life and time. May God bless us.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING :

We wish all a very Happy Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you Lord your bountiful blessings upon our land and people. God bless you and your families!
