22nd Sunday In Ordinary Time August 30, 2020

Suffering happens while sun shines, while others carry on as usual. While traffic continues to flow. As Jeremiah spoke if the approaching sufferings Jerusalem and his own troubled relationship with God, so Jesus in today’s Gospel prepares his disciples for his approaching ordeal at Jerusalem. He speaks of it as necessary not a necessity that lies in the nature of things, not a tragic fate, but the will of God made known through the prophesies. Peter denies that Jesus must suffer. Peter wants to banish suffering from the agenda; Jesus brings the subject to the forefront of the conversation. To understand Jesus means to understand the cross. That is the essence of his teaching and that is why Peter is denounced so strongly. Peter is seen as a tempter; his ambitions and desires, Jesus says, belong to the realm of Satan. Peter wants Jesus to be immune from frustration, suffering and contempt. The Christ of his dreams is all glory and prestige, untouched by vulnerable humanity. The way of the cross Jesus outlines for himself is the way of renunciation his followers are called to tread. Jesus faced rejection which could be conquered only if it was accepted. He faced rejection which could be transformed only if he assented to it.if the suffering was to pass, it had to be endured. The way of the cross which Jesus followed was one which passed through streets and markets, by houses and places, by windows and doors. While it happened people went about their business. Suffering must run the course of the familiar. As Christians we live in the assurance that our way of the cross does not go unnoticed. Jesus is our suffering companion; he proves to be our strength; his power is mighty in our weakness. If the cross is the price to be paid for love, then carrying it is love’s proof in action. For Jesus., that is enough.

21st  Sunday In Ordinary Time August 23, 2020

One of the most interesting characters in the Gospel is surely Peter. Peter is almost too human, too like ourselves. We see his ups and downs. At times he is very brave. At other times he is very cowardly. At times he is rocklike in his faith. At other times he is more like a piece of jelly. But what is fascinating to watch the way Christ dealt with him. How patient he was. How he helped him to grow into the man who was ready to lay down his life for him, and who eventually did. But this should not surprise us, for this is how growth happens. Let us, therefore, take a closer look at the relationship between Christ and Peter. It will help us to in Closeness to Christ. It will teach us how best to help those we love to grow. It all began with the fact that Christ called him. He did because he obviously saw potential in him. We all need someone to believe in us. Christ involved him in his work. He made him a partner in it, not a mere messenger boy. Responsibility helps people to grow. When Peter made his great declaration of faith, ‘You’re the Christ Son of living God’, Christ praised him and promised him further responsibility. We all need recognition for work well done. We all need affirmation. This encourages further generosity. Christ corrected him. He confronted him, He even threatened to cut him off completely over the feet washing incident. We have to be stem at times and refuse to compromise in matters of principle. He understood that when Peter denied him, he did so not so much out of evil as out of weakness. He allowed him the space to learn from his failure. He forgave him and give him the chance to be begin again. He didn’t cut him off. We all need someone who can understand our weakness, and who doesn’t cut us off simply because we don’t produce the good right away. The one thing Christ never did was spoil him. It was only when Peter  regained his faith and reasserted his love that he was put in charge of the flock. In a way Peter’s story is our story too. We are so much like him. We too blow hot and cold in our loyalty to Christ. Sometimes we are strong, and sometimes we are like a reed shaking in the wind. But we should not be afraid to look at ourselves to see if we are growing as Christians; to see if we are becoming more attached to Christ. Without a warm relationship with Christ, such as Peter had, we are only in the fringes of Christianity. We are like someone talking about love compared with someone who is in love. We can learn so much from Peter for our own relationship with Christ. Peter was the first Pope. In assessing a pope, we should not so much look for cleverness, for there is enough cleverness in the world, but for goodness.

20th  Sunday In Ordinary Time August 16, 2020

Scripture today teaches us to be strong and constant in the faces of chaos and upheaval. It alerts us to the unsuspecting ways through which God makes Himself present to us to greater justice. In the first reading. The prophet Isaiah reminds the people in exile. “Have a care for justice and to act with integrity and the  Lord’s salvation will come “. He then goes on to spell out in concrete terms what it means to care for justice and to act with integrity. It means to embrace foreigners and others who are considered outsiders. “ My house Isaiah proclaims, shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” In the Gospel, Jesus also challenges such a mentality and shows that God is often found in the unlikely. He shows that God is more concerned about the inside of the person than the outside. Here, in the encounter with the Canaanite woman, Jesus again affirms that the heart is more important than physical, racial and gender boundaries. Against all odds , including the initial difference of Jesus, the poor woman shows herself to be an intelligent, engaging and faith -filled person. She is like the Centurion who is praised for the depth of faith beyond her social status, race and gender. This is a giant leap in boundary crossing because in Jewish minds, foreigners are expendable. He makes a hero of a Samaritan leper. a Samaritan woman, a tax collector Zacchaeud, a blind beggar Bartimaeus and other marginalized characters. He turns our sense of privilege and entitlement in its head. He shakes  us out of our comfort zone. He challenges to do a bit of boundary crossing in order to appreciate “the otherness”  of God. We need to be alert and open to God’s saving grace in the most unlikely places and people. It’s a fallacy and delusion to think that we have the answer to every problem there is. Pope Francis says that the church needs to know how to recognize the lord’s action in the world, in culture and in people’s daily lives and experiences. It calls us to broaden our perspective to be mindful of the truth, goodness and shared values even among people differ or oppose us.

19th  Sunday In Ordinary Time August 9, 2020

On this Sunday , the Church joyfully reminds us that Jesus our Savioris always close to us. He calms the storms of our life. He lifts us from the depths, and restores our peace. The presence of the storm, and all that it represents definitely make us confused, and afraid in life. Thus, it equally deprived us of our peace. The disciples of Jesus experienced the storm of their life, and Jesus was available to calm it, and equally, restore their peace. “Storms” are part and parcel of our human existence. They are inevitable in this world, just as the waves are inevitable in the sea. Sometimes they hit us so hard that we are crushed, devastated, and almost annihilated. Like the disciples of Jesus, each one of us experiences the storm in diverse ways in our lives. That is the storm that robs us of our peace. However, when they encounter Christ, our peace is restored and they disappear. Hence, Paul wrote:”We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;perplexed, but not driven to despair, persecuted, not forsaken; stuck down, but not destroyed, always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus May be manifested in our bodies (2Cor 4:8-9). Every believer faced trying circumstances, it feels as if God is asking us to step out and ‘walk on water’. It’s in these moments Jesus says” Do not be afraid”. So, all we need to do is to trust Him, and keep walking without the fear of sinking. Let us hold on firmly to Jesus, who calms our storms and restores our peace.

18th  Sunday In Ordinary Time August 2, 2020

There is a special term that we use to describe God taking care of our needs and that is God’s Providence or sometimes referred to as Divine Providence. And while it must be a bit difficult to describe, we are all living proof that it has been at work in our lives for all of our lives. Ordinarily it happens in an ordinary manner. Sometimes it happens in an extraordinary manner. Yes, God is taking care of things, and it is important for me and for you to remember that. The World is not going to fall apart if you or I go out of existence. This is especially an area where it is especially important for us to put our faith into action, to practice what we believe. We can say that it is our faith in God that makes it possible for us to believe that God has concern and care for us, that Godis a provident God. This in turn should make us want to love God. After all, as  St. Paul says, what do you have that you have not received? The only correct and honest answer is “nothing”. For it all has ultimately come from God. St. Paul had many opportunities to prove his love for Christ during very difficult circumstances. And he succeeded by remaining faithful. Our main opportunities are possibly not too difficult to except for the day in and day out routine-ness of our service. And that can be a great thing. Being faithful in our love and service of Christ over the years is a great thing. And there are many saints who became saints just by doing that. Think of the Little Flower, St. Bernadette, St. Kateri, and St. Aloysius. They were not known for any great accomplishments. They just did their ordinary everyday things extraordinarily well. That is within the grasp of each of us. That is the way we have of proving that we love God. If we can live convinced that God is taking care of us, and He really is, we should feel as secure as a baby in mother’s arms. Then all we have to do are those things that God puts in front of us to do. And when it is all over, we will have heaven awaiting us. !
