Visions of New Possibilities

Reflection: In his two most famous speeches, "I Have a Dream" and "I've Been to the Mountain," The renowned Martin Luther King, Jr. described a vision of humanity. From the mountain he saw the promise land where black and white children eat side by side at the table of fellowship. In contrast to the racist society around him, he saw a vision of possibility. This vision empowered him to engage new possibilities.  In Christ's transfiguration the disciples find themselves on the mountain. They find Moses and Elijah, two prophets who themselves experienced God quite directly on Mount Sinai. The Father speaks as he did to Moses, from a cloud: "This is my beloved Son . .. Listen to him." Listen to this fulfillment of the Law and Prophets. Listen to him who is my very Word of life.  To have been to the mountain is to see and be empowered to engage the world as God does. You can get stalled. Peter wants to stay right there, "I will make three tents here." But visions are for action. This includes some people I know: an elderly priest who tapped into extraordinary evangelical zeal; a visionary who started a food distribution program; a couple happily married for fifty years who, thanks to a Marriage Encounter, learned to honor each other even more deeply.

Meditation: Does the revelation of Jesus give us a vision of new possibilities? How can these be a real part of our life?
Prayer: Father, let your Son empower me to see visions of your kingdom.  I trust that you will all have a good week!
